Barry E. Kaplan is a founding member in the Law Firm of Myers & Kaplan Intellectual Property Law, LLC. Prior to joining Myers & Kaplan, Barry was a founding partner in the law firm of Hughes & Kaplan (est. 1992), where he managed that firm's practice in intellectual property, technology and entertainment law.
Barry is licensed to practice law in the State of Georgia and is registered as a patent attorney to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He practices in the areas of intellectual property and computer law, including patent, trademark, and copyright causes. His practice further includes litigation, contracting, licensing, and transferring of intellectual property assets, including those attendant to all forms of technology and the arts (music, art, the performing arts, and literary works of all forms).
American Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Bar Association, including its Intellectual Property Law Section. He serves on the latter Association's subcommittee 106, focusing on United States patent law and policy concerning the rights of inventors. Barry is also a member of the State Bar of Georgia, including its Sections on Intellectual Property Law and Computer Law; the Atlanta Bar Association; and, the Gwinnett County Bar Association. Barry was the 1997 recipient of the Gwinnett County Bar Association's Pro Bono Award for his outstanding service to the citizens of Gwinnett County.
In addition to his law degree from Georgia State University, Barry holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson University, where he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. Prior to attending law school, Barry was a mechanical engineer for Atlanta-based Scientific Atlanta, Inc.'s Electro-Products Division, where he served as one of the lead product engineers for its line of tracking and telemetry products; and, later, as the supervisor of that Division's Manufacturing Engineering Department. Barry also holds a NASA certification in fiber optic assembly methods.
